Die Biskaya (The Biscay)

11.08.-13.08.15 (Martin)

The biscay- she is famous, notorious and sometimes dreaded. This sailing area is known for bad weather, strong storms and extreme waves. The biscay starts on the west coast of France and ends at the northcoast of Spain.

For us this now will be the longest route, its about 400 nautical miles long. After good research of the weather and especially of the wind forecast we decided that we want to start on tuesday, the 11th of august at 4am. We went out of Brest with our engines, also with currents from behind and entered an absolutely dark night, without a moon. The sun came out, well at least thats what our calendar said- because we couldn’t see it. But at am we got company by a lot of dolphins, which played with the wave of our hulls- that was sunshine for us :)
the wind was blowing with 11-14kn. We pulled up the parasailor and started going. At noon the wind increased up til 17-20kn and we decided to leave the parasailor. As we did only 6-9kn of speed over ground we now did 11-13kn.

At 8pm there was an 3 meter high wave, luckily from behind. At 10pm we started to change every 3 hours. I took the first shift- the Parasailor stood up well and the wind was around 20kn. The night was very quiet and at 4am we were able to write down our first 24h sailed distance.
It was 166nm, so almost 7kn in average! We are very proud on that.
the sun rise looked like the one a day before- the sun was missing, rain and cloudy skies.
On wednesday (08.12.) morning at 10am we sailed down a wave and had 16,2 kn on our log- that was a little scary, but the wind was very steady and the Parasailor stood up good.

At 4pm the wind changed direction from NE to S and then increased fully. So we took the Parasailor down and turned the engines on. Finally the sun came out and we brought out 3 fishing rods, drove with 2kn and took pour time to cook- we sadly had no fish to cook (not even on the rods), but we had scampis from the freezer and vegetables from Thailand and rice.

The wind changed then again to SE and came with 5-7kn. so we sailed with full sails (Mainsail & Code =) into the dark night. I took over the shift at 4am, by then the wind came from NW and was blowing from behind with 20kn. Our 24h distance was this time 152nm.
We now had 1000nm behind us.
Sadly I wanted to much and decided to pull up the Parasailor, even though Micha said quietly, that this would not be a good idea, because of the absolutely darkness and wind up til 25kn….
It didn’t work out very well and after an hour the Parasailor ripped apart…. so we took it down, even though the wind didn’t make that so easy for us. Micha was wright and i learned something;-)

Then we only had our genoa and sailed 6,5kn to La Coruna. The waves hight increased now up to 5-6meters and was over our hulls.

Wellen in der Biskaya
Waves in the biscay
At 2pm we finally berthed in La Coruna- 391 nm in 58 hours!
We were proud to accomplish this long of a distance.

After we went to the harbormaster, we went into town and ate a pizza and went to bed. We dreamed that the sun would be shining on the next day-

Spain

that it would be finally warm, we wouldn’t need warm socks, sweaters and hats anymore, but instead sandals and t-shirts.

On the next morning we woke up in the south:
