Laxe, Ribeira, Baiona, Cascais

29.08 - 3.09 (Micha)
After the weather finally decreased from 45knots in gusts down to normal weather conditions we decided to use this chance and started our trip into our first bay, to puerto de Laxe; the first time on anchor for us! While the SY Antares has left us already this morning did we and Wilhelm and Katrin from the SY Sophie Marie decided to spent the next couple of days together. We arrived the bay at 10pm, and that in complete fog. But the fag was so tight, that we could barely see whats happening 20 meters in front of us. Luckily we have our plotter, AIS and Radar.
We are still very impressed about the ones, that have to live and navigate without these things. The continuous plumb, the maneuvering without any computer systems, all the time having to find out your position via a compass, sun and map and how the were able to handle all the weather conditions; no matter if it was foggy, raining or clear outside. These were the real masters of navigation. As we finally had the anchor out, we set the alarm for the anchor in an app on our phone (also impossible several years ago) and fell into bed. After the alarm woke up dad 3 times at night and the anchor still didn't move, he finally realized, that the swoi circle (swoi= turning around the anchor) was set on a too small scale; so turning the circle bigger and back to sleep. As we woke up on the next day, we finally were impressed about the beauty of this bay! Already early in the morning were people on the beach and were wandering around. The skyline of the houses was indescribable and amazingly pretty; no tourism, not a commercial town but a nice little village with old houses, a beautiful beach - it was astonishing.
Delfine besuchten uns auf unserer Reise immer wieder...
Dolphins were visiting us several times on our trip….

After a day in the bay we started our way to the next bay: Ribeira. The way to Ribeira wasn’t very long, but a beautiful sailing- trip. The sun was shining brightly, the wind was downwind with up to 20 knots and the waves were comfortable. We really enjoyed the day and met the already arrived SY Sophie Marie in the bay. The entrance was a little tricky; on the one side it wasn’t deep enough, fishing nets were all over the place and on the other side we had reefs sticking out of the water. But we managed it well and anchored with our First Step behind our friends. Here was also an beautiful, long beach with a camping ground and a very pretty mountains and forrest background. Even Dolphins were jumping next to our boat.
Absolutely amazing.

...und es ist jedes mal ein Erlebnis
...and it it always a special experience
We finished this beautiful day in peace on our boat….
This time it was me, who had to take the phone for the anchor watch (alarm) during the night. After the alarm was also throwing me out of bed for 3 times I realized, that it was the same problem than the night before; swoi circle was set to small. So turned the scale a little higher and again back in the peaceful bed- well it wasn’t as peaceful as I thought it would be!!!

3 hours later somebody was screaming and knocking on our boat like crazy. As I was totally confused and tired on deck, I saw a fisher man, who wanted to throw his nets out, exactly where we anchored. So he asked us to move. Unbelievable, at 8 o’clock in the morning.
Because we were to tired to discuss we thought we might better get the anchor up and just move a little further out. So the anchor was up, engines turned on and as we tried to move forward we suddenly heard a loud bang. We saw, that the rope from our dinghy, which we had tide to our boat, came into the propeller. As we tried to drive backwards a little bit. Great, now we were able to only use the portside engine! While the fisherman was still screaming and telling us to keep going, we tried to fight with one engine against the stream of the water, cause it was pushing us onto the reefs. Under continuous screaming from the fisherman and the pressure, to get agains the streaming water we luckily managed it to find a new anchor spot. And as we were in the process of letting the anchor down, the fisherman was screaming again, that this would be far enough for his nets, so we could let our anchor down. A „little“ annoyed  and very loud I answered him in such a way, that made him immediately stop screaming and he never sad another word again and didn’t come close than 200meters to our boat, finally silence!!!!

A half an hour later I found myself in an diving suit (sadly it is still not as warm as we hoped it would be) with a knife and a flash light to get the rope off from the propeller.

Sadly the water is still too cold for no diving suit
So nun erst mal entspannen.
Luckily it was only the rope, that was tangled up with the propeller and nothing else happened. No disfunction or any similar. So it was time to relax. A look into the weather datas and grib files showed us, that we didn’t had enough time to relax, because we had to be in Lisboa in the next 3-4 days, otherwise we had no chance for good wind. Because Wilhelm and Katrin had no need to hurry (we have because Julia is coming to Madeira in 2 weeks), they decided to stay in the bay for a little longer and so it came to a goodbye between the SY Sophie Marie and us. It was an amazing time and he hope to stay in contact.

In Baiona! An dem Strand!!!! Wunderschön.
So we took off for Baiona. In front of Baiona there is a little Island, that separates the entrance to the bay in two. While I would go around the island, to the safer entrance, dad of course had to pass through the smaller entrance, but luckily everything went fine. And it turned out to be a good choice, because on the port side we had an amazing view on a beautiful part of the city that contained big, pretty houses with privat beaches and a big green forrest in the background. The smell of the trees woke up old memories in me from our old vacations (Korsika) and it was just amazing to drive by it. I said to dad, if I will ever buy an house, then it should be here! In Baiona! On that beach!!! Wonderful.

After we arrived in the harbour we picked up our package from Germany at the marina office (a new halyard for our Parasailor), cleaned the boat from the inside and outside and went out for dinner on the beach promenade. In a pretty Restaurant with very nice, english speaking staff we leaned back and were letting ourselves go, and enjoyed the peaceful night.…
On the next morning then we had another surprise, the SY Antares suddenly appeared. The anchored during the night in Baiona and decided to visite us for a last goodbye. And so they joined us for a coffee on board.

Abschied von der Antares
Goodbye from the Antares
Schade, sehr sehr schade.
Because we had in mind to get from Baiona to Lisboa we also had to say goodbye to Erhard and Inge. We said goodbye with one crying, but also one laughing eye. In the hope, that we will see eachother again.
So, we started our trip to Lisboa. Sadly in a, for me, too fast way! I didn’t plan on sailing along the Portuguese coast that fast. Because I wanted to stop at several places wich are worldwide known as good wave surfing areas and wanted to try it out. Some of the world best spots, that make portugal so popular for surfing know passed us so quickly; Porto, Figuera da Foz, Praia do Norte, Peniche, Ericira and so on. That was sad, very very sad.

I wanted to try it out so badly, but the weather gave us not chance…. But I hope, that I eventually get to surf in Lisboa or madeira, but lets see, whats going to happen.

So after we left Baiona behind us and took off to the open sea, we became  3 meter high wave and wind from behind with up to 28 knots.

We didn’t think long about it and got up our Parasailor (140m^2 big sail) and raced with the wave from behind in direction Cascais. Sometimes our plotter even showed us 14,5 knots speed over ground.

We sailed unbelievable fast and made our longest, and best …. (=the miles you sail during 24 hours) of 187 miles a day!

During the night we decided to just sail with the genoa and main sail and still with that we were racing over the waves. But sadly the waves changed directions and so we had it crushing at our boat from the side. Noises, we have never heard before from or First Step, so loud, that we just couldn’t find any sleep, even though we had 3 hour shifts. On the next day at around 5am the waves slightly decreased and we raced to Cascais. We didn’t plan on going directly into a Marina in Lisboa, because we wanted to stay on anchorage in peac in a little town called Cascais in front of Lisboa. Turned out to be a good idea! Cascais had a nice bay with beautiful beaches and some naturals cliffs and old buildings in the back made the picture of Cascais perfect.

ruhige Ankerbucht in Cascais
A peaceful anchoring bay in Cascais.
Our plan was now, to wait for a good weather window to cross over to Madeira, where we would take our first visitor on board, my Julia, and would continuo to sail to the canary islands.

But first the weather showed us, that we have to wait a couple of days, which we used.

Strandspaziergang an "unserer Bucht"
A walk on the beach at „our bay“.
Relaxing and a little sightseeing in Lisboa was our plan, but we sadly never came to that.

Stattdessen probierten wir uns im
Stand-up-paddling
Instead we tried ourselves in Stand-up-padeling around the bay and swam a little bit at the nice beaches.

Papa und ich beim Versuch des Stand-up-paddlings....
Dad and me trying to stand-up-paddle…

.…but this conditions make it much more easier to enjoy.

The weather was for our taste still a little bit to fresh, but that will come, we are sure….
Now its on to get back some strength for the next exhausting and for ow our longest trip to Madeira, to my Julia.
Wir freuen uns :) We are looking forward to that :)

La Coruna

13.08-29.08 (Martin)
The Biscay is done, we made it-our first long sailing part. We went, after the declaration at the Habormasters Office (attractive Spanish girl) was complete, into the old town and ate some pizza with typical Spanish beer (Estrella Galicia).

The sailmaker came and took our torn Parasailor for some fixing work and after that we fell tired but lucky into our beds.
On the next day did we rent a car for 3 days to drive to Santiago de Compostela. We started on Saturday noon and because they did not accept drivers under 24 years of age, I was the lucky one to drive… (see below the commentary from Micha)
We arrived around 3:30pm with slight rain and 19degrees Celcius in Santiago de Compostella and I suddenly see the following message on my phone:

As I joined an helping- transport with „hope for a new generation“ to Romania last year have we two met.
Sabine was wandering with her friend the 270km long north-route of the Way of St. James -amazing work!

On the next day we arranged to meet us in the old town for lunch and ate some tasty Paella.
Treffen in Santiago de Compostela
Meeting in Santiago de Compostela
Santiago de Compostela ist DIE Pilgerstätte - der Wallfahrtsort Spaniens und das Ende des Jakobwegs (Camino de Santiago).
Santiago de Compostela ist THE ONE pilgrimage the pilgrimage of spain and the end of the way of St. James (Camino de Santiago)

 History:
Jacob, an apostel of Jesus and brother of John (Sons of the Zebedäus), is supposed to be buried here. According to the Story the grave is found around 820 and the King Alfons II from Asturia (791-842) built a church in remembrance. This church was destroyed in 997 and rebuilt in the 11th century.
Santiago de Compostela is today an World heritage.
On the square in front of the cathedral arrive wanderers from all countries and the atmosphere is very special- to finally have achieved it!

Wunderschöne Glasmalereien. Beautiful glaspaintings.
The old town had pretty little streets and cafes, but sadly the whole city is very concentrated on tourism. We stayed the night in a very nice hotel about 3 kilometers away from Santiago and on Monday morning did we breakfast in a little café- nobody spoke English and Micha (learned 4 lections of Spanish on his computer) ordered scrambled eggs, bread and coffee- and it came…
I was really impressed!

Then we drove back to La Coruna and Michas commentary to my driving skills are following: “You can park in like a world champion, but your driving is horrible”;-)Thank you very much!

On the next day the SY Sophie Marie (Wilhelm and Kathrin) appeared suddenly in the berth next to us and a short time after that arrived also the SY Antares (Inge and Erhard). We already said goodbye in Roskoff, because the 2 yachts actually planned on sailing into the Biscay. But the weather wasn’t as expected and so they now lay next to us, which had to be celebrated with an cold beer.

Wilhelm (li.) und Erhard - Biskaya geschafft!
Wilhelm (left) and Erhard – Made the Biscay!

A look on the weather files made us shiver, a low pressure area everywhere we looked at, rain and a maximum of 19- 20 degree, which meant for us, that we will still stay a while in La Coruna.

Spaniens Sonne lässt grüßen...
The spanish sun is greeting…

Das Deck wurde wenigstens von oben "gesäubert"
At least the deck gets cleaned from "above"

Unsere Freude über das Wetter :-(
How we felt about the weather :-(

The sailmaker also made two wants- covers for us and 2 bags (for our hydro generator and downrigger).

As everything was dried up, we made a little trip into the old town. La Coruna was visited from English wanderes in the 14th and 15th century in connection to the pilgrimage to Santiago de Composstela.
The city was attacked in 1589, under the power of Sir Francis Drake. But they were able to stand against the attack, which was possible through an butcher wife, called Maria Pita. The square was also named after her.
We experienced the worshiping of the Maria Pita, because there was an celebration in honesty for her from 1.08. -30.08.

There were fireworks, concerts on the main square and we were right in the center of it.

Viele erhaltene alte Bauten. Still a lot of old buildings exist.

A little weird was, that they had an Octoberfest with german beer- brands there….

There were also two days of cleaning. A few of you know, that my wife says, that she is the only one who cleans at home, and I never do. That’s why Micha was cleaning- ok I helped a little bit. All steel had to be polished, the deck had to be cleaned, inside also as outside, vacuum- cleaning, hot water floor cleaning, polishing….

Micha schrubbt das Deck bis es glänzt... Micha cleans the Deck until its shining…

Voller Elan wird geschrubbt, poliert und lackiert.... Full of Motivation did we wash, polish and lacquered
Kanten der Motorabdeckungen werden lackiert The corners of the engine cover became lacquered

"Putznie" bei der Arbeit...... Me actually at work…

The boat was shining and the SY Antares and SY Sophie Marie wanted us to clean their boat as well, which we firmly declined.

But what we found was an new way to earn some money: a mobile hair cutter.

neuer Geschäftszweig: mobiler Frisör
New income idea: mobile Hair cutter.

After I cut Michas hair and he did mine, wanted also 3 other Sailors, (probably because of our professional attitude) to get their hair done! Sadly we couldn’t do that because of the bad weather (again rain)- but we thought, if we will ever become close to having no money, we will think of the idea again.
But instead we took care of the alarm of our battery- it showed us continuously a to high voltage. After a couple of phone calls with the guy, who installed it and reading in the handbook of Mastervolt we climed down in the portside engine room, opened the charger and found, that the connections were wrong. We have 3 different batteries which get charged over the charger (1x starter- battery starboard engine, 1x starter- battery portside engine and the service- battery). Sadly were on the output 2 (starter- battery starboard) nothing connected, but therefore 3 cables on the output for the service- battery.

I asked Erhard (SY Antares), used to work as an electrical engineer, and explained to him my problem. He came with his equipment and we were able to connect and control all cables right. Sailors help each other’s out- amazing!

We disconnected the First Step from any kind of electricity, disconnected all batteries and cut off the cable shoes.

Now we needed new cable shoes: 16mm^2 and 32mm^2 and an fitting ……

I borrowed the bike from Erhard and drove 5 kilometers to the next Marina Seca- there was also our sailmaker located, which we visited before by bus.

The master of the warf had fitting cable shoes. But said, he is not allowed to give me any tools- rules of the company. I looked at him as sad as I could (I sadly could not play with my charme, cause I wasn’t a female) but he still gave in and borrowed me his crimping tool and said, I could just leave it in the Marina Office, somebody will get it.

I still did not had all the right tools i needed, but luckily sailors help eachother and so did Wilhelm from the SY Sophie Marie help me out. I made out with Erhard, that he will help me next day with the cables.

On the next day we still had our rainy weather- but we had no electricity and so we had, regardless of the weather, get everything done today. We built Erhard, similar to the work on german streets a dry little place and so Erhard sat down in our engine room and started working.

After 2 hours we had, thanks to Erhard, everything connected the right way, measured through and everything worked fine.
Ein Weltumsegler sagte mal den Satz:
A world sailer sad one time:
„Wir reparieren uns um die Welt!“
„We repair ourselves around the world!“

I thought that this wouldnt be with a new boat, but became and still get lectured different.
So, that were 16 days of La Coruna, finally we can go on....
