Mercy Ship Support

Liebe Blogleser,
Dear blog reader,

we want to make the work of Mercy Ships during our traveling more known and started a fundraiser, to support them with money.

Our goal is, that we want to support them with the idea to collect money for every sailed nautical mile, we thought of  2€ -5€ per mile. It would be great, if you would help us with that (we appreciate every amount)!
We need you help!
Thank you, especially to our family, that already supported us so much. Currently we have already collected 6000€, but there are way more, free sailed parts and nautical miles to cover that are waiting for you:-)

Under our column 'Mercy Ships' you will get to know more about the work and on the right hand side you can watch different youtube- clips, to learn more about the great work of Mercy Ships.

Under the column 'Mercy Ships Support' you will get to know, how you can help us the best way.
You can write us an email and tell us, which sailing trip you want to support.
We started an fundraiser bank account, on which you can transfer money directly, if you would like to donate directly to Mercy Ships. You will also find the details of the bank account under this column, please keep in mind to state - Sabbatical Martin und Micha - as your cause of the donation.
You will also receive a donation receipt.

Betrag steuerlich absetzbar!!!
For all of you that have a company or are self employed, there is a great way to support Mercy Ships in a special way- if you use this way, then (normally) the whole donation is tax- deductible.

Vielen Dank für Eure Unterstützung!
Thank you so much for your support!

Kommentare/ Commentary

Liebe Follower,
Dear follower,

From different sites we got asked, if there is a possibility to write some comments. At this point we want to really say thank you to Karin and Michael from Schorndorf, which (in the moment) are the only ones that wrote a comment. We were really happy about it, because that way we knew, that our blog is actually not just in the web and nobody reads it, but that we actually have some, that look at the blog. So please feel free to write a comment on our new column, 'Commentary'.

At that site we want to give you the possibility, to write us something personal or to write a comment to certain blog entrees. All of your commentaries will be published to get a little more attention and to eventually start a conversation. We would really appreciate it, if you could write a comment here and then write us some nice words:) The best would be, if you add the name of the blog entree, to wich you want to comment something to. Of course you can also write anonym, so everything is open for you...
And we are looking forward to your comments- write as much as you can :)

Barbados

Geschichte:
History:

Barbados, an Island that Columbus, during his time, never explored and so it got discovered in 1536 bei Pedro a Campos and his Crew, who actually planed to go to Brasil. Because they were so impressed by the shape of the trees, which looked like hanging beards they called the Island „Isla de los Barbados“. The Island of beards. This name got stuck with the Island even as the England people arrived Barbados in 1627. They really had a big impact over almost 3 centuries on the Island and its locals with their traditions and custom. The Island kept its name till today but became, because of the great englisch impact, the nickname „little England“.

In the 18th century they started to plant sugarcane in Barbados and because of the ideal elements they quickly became the biggest sugar producer of the english colony. Because they needed a lot of people for the planting and production of sugar the english imported a lot of slaves from Africa and 95% of them are the ancestors of the population today.

Barbados hatte sich also in dem Reiseführer gut präsentiert und lockte mit schönen Bildern und einer interessanten Geschichte. Da Papa und ich doch relativ schnell den Atlantik überquerten und als 9. Platz nach nur 12 Tagen in St. Lucia angekommen wären, uns aber der Platz völlig egal war und wir nicht ewig in St. Lucia rumhängen wollten, entschlossen wir uns, NICHT nach St. Lucia zu fahren, sondern einen Stop in Barbados zu machen. Wie sich rausstellte war das die richtige Entscheidung;
Barbados presented itself well on the tourism guide and it enticed with great pictures and an interesting history. Because dad and I crossed the atlantic ocean quiet fast we could have been 9th place overall of the ARC+, but because we didn’t care about the racing part of the ARC at all and did not want to wait in St. Lucia for 12 days we decided NOT to go to St. Lucia first, but instead of Barbados. Turned out to be the absolutely right decision;

Als wir die Küste von Barbados entlang segelten auf den Weg zur Hauptstadt Bridgetown vielen uns gleich zwei Sachen auf;
As we sailed along the Coast of Barbados to get to the capital, Bridgetown, we recognized two things;
First, the Island was very flat, the highest mountain there is 340meters high.
Secondly, the Island was beautiful green and looked at us with unbelievable pretty, blue water.

Thats were we wanted to be- so after we read the harbor guide 3 times and talked to several people to make sure it was right, we berthed in the big cruising- ship harbor next to the big Germany company „Mein Schiff“ and the „Jewels of the Seas“ and started our way to the declaration office. Somehow funny, two huge cruising- ships laied next to us on the left and right side and we were right between those two. In the next couple of days these should not stay the only cruising ships . I thought, our boat was big, but these were massive, our boat could have been the rescue boat for them. Well, after we asked our way through to the immigration office we got send to the health office, from there to the declaration office an then back again to the immigrations office. Finally, after 1 1/2 hours we finished the declaration/immigration procedure and had the stamp in our passports.

Now we went to the Carlisle Bay and dropped the anchor in 8 meter deep, blue, crystal-clear water and jumped in afterwards. We felt great! We crossed the atlantic ocean and finally arrived at the paradise, we have been waiting for so long. Not enough, two turtles came up on us and kindly welcomed us in Barbados.

Wir waren da! Das PARADIES! Endlich!
We were there! The PARADISE! Finally!
Papa genießt den Wilkommens-drink im blauen Wasser/ Dad enjoys the welcome- drink in the blue water

And thats how we felt. It was absolutely amazing. The next couple of days should go bye, with beer, rum, swimming, snorkeling and long walks on the beach way to fast.

We looked, after we have finally realized where we are, in the tourism guide and planed our next days. We had 5 days in Barbados, before we had to sail to St. Lucia to arrive before the finishing line would close.

The first day flew bye and at the second day we went slowly, after a swim in the morning with our own boat turtles, into town. Bridgetown is described in the tourism guide as a fascinating mixture between old and new. Even though they had a couple of old buildings (less of the new ones), the fascinating flair weren’t really the buildings, but instead the people and the town itself. The locals were so friendly and nice, everybody welcomed us very warm and wished us a great stay, there was a fresh market, a pretty little harbor inside the town with a nice park, a very busy shopping street and a lot of little bars…
Bridgetown had a different flair, not really one between old and new, but more a pulling in, wanting to experience flair, if there is something like that, but this flair was definitely fascinating, like described.
We enjoyed the atmosphere and found ourself in a bar, that became, because of the great wifi our new home bar during the next days.

On the next day we went to the Mount Gay Rum Distillery, in which we wanted to taste the oldest Rum in the world and take a look at the production. Since 1703 exists an official declaration, that stated, that this Distillery at Barbados produced Rum since several years and so this Distillery became the oldest in the world. We became, at noon, a tour through the historic discovery of rum itself and the historical production changes. Then we were able to take a little glimpse at the production itself and started the Rum tasting. It was very interesting to taste the different elements out of the Rum and to discover the different brands and its special ingredients. You were able to taste exactly, what the tour guide told you about the ingredients of the rum you were tasting. It also was a weird, but very cool feeling to know, you were drinking the same the Rum, that the pirates used to drink. However, because the tasting was at noon, the sun stood really high and we didn’t eat a lot we walked, not in a real straight line and with a little funny feeling, back to our boat;)

On the next day we then went to Harrison’s Cave. This cave was recommended to us by so many different people and was praised very high and described as beautiful. Harrison’s Cave was supposed to be a breathtaking Cave, wich developed in the last thousand years because of flowing water and now gave a home to underground rivers, waterfalls, stalactites, stalagmites and crystallizing chalk-stone. And that was exactly, what she delivered. It was super interesting to drive with a little shuttle through the cave and look at the crystal-clear water, to take pictures at the waterfalls and discover the crystallizing chalk walls. Harrison’s Cave was wonderful and definitely something special, which should be on the list for every visit in Barbados.

As the ending of our 5 day short vacation on Barbados we enjoyed the day in the beach bar „the Boatyard“, that tried to entice with good music, wonderful beaches, tasty food and cocktails, a water- trampoline, a sling-rope and a diving tower. An indescribable amount of Americans from the cruise ships were there. We met a lot of Americans and they were really interested in our journey and we talked, gave out our blog address and spent a nice time together at the beach. Thats were we spent our last day, before we headed to St. Lucia at the next day.

Now we had, as the last thing, get back to the cruising harbor and check out at the offices. This time there were 5 huge cruising ships in the harbor. Under them one of the Norwegian flotilla, one AIDA, a TUI ship and two others, of which we couldn’t read the name. That explained the massive amount of Americans at the beach bar.
Before we wanted to start our way to St. Lucia, we were visiting a wrecked ship in the bay and discovered it by snorkeling. It was a very nice and so a good ending…

The goodbye was very very hard for us and we did not wanted to leave Barbados, but at 4pm we finally got our butts and our anchor up and sailed in direction to St. Lucia. Which we arrived after 103miles and 15 hours. St. Lucia offered a completely different picture as Barbados; a very high island, with a lot of green mountains, dark blue water and a coast with lots of cliffs. We were finally there and crossed the finishing line of the ARC+ as the last boat.

Barbados was a beautiful trip and it is for sure worth a trip. It was the perfect destination to arrive after an atlantic crossing and the perfect start for our caribbean travels. It was hurting us a little bit to leave Barbados, but with the expectation to see lots more of these beautiful islands and bays we were able to leave it behind us and we are very excited, what the future may bring us.

And so that you can, at least a little bit, experience our stay in Barbados you will find here a little clip:

Atlantiküberquerung/ Leg 2 Kapverden (Mindelo) – Karibik (St. Lucia - geplant) (Atlantic crossing leg 2)

18.11 – 01.12.2015 (Martin)

After we made the first leg without any bigger problems we were ready for the second. We are planing with 12-14 days for the crossing. The preparations for the crossing were a little rough and hectic (paying, fueling, last works… ) but the crossed the starting line well and were ready to go. With all sails up we started our second leg and after 30 minutes we had to get the first reff (6 beaufort), and at night we needed the second reff (7 beaufort). I wrote the night/ day plan (nights 3,5 hours- we wanted to try that out).

Nachts 3,5 Std./ Tagsüber 3-4 Std.-Schichten
At night 3,5 hours/ during the day 3-4 hour shifts
Micha started at 9 pm. The night was a nightmare, wind and waves came from different directions- the boat got threw around by the waves and no one of us were able to sleep. On the next morning we changed the direction and sailed a more southerly course, it became calmer. Micha had a little headache and I made us some pork filets with bacon and rosemary potatoes and salat- we are doing better :-)

Biss: Goldmakrele (90 cm), Micha musste richtig kämpfen
On the next day (20.11.) we threw out the fishing rods- after a short time we already had our first fish: a amberjack (50cm). After another half an hour our second fish: Mahi mahi (90cm), Micha had to fight a lot

Kampf und Vorfreude...
Fight and anticipation…

Goldmakrele, Mahi-Mahi

At the evening we had another bite, this time a little stronger (we fought 1 hour), the night already came in- but then we finally got out a beautiful Bonito (Tuna)- my personally biggest fish (about 12-14 Kg).

Bonito, 12-14 KG
Micha filetiert seinen ersten Fisch
Micha is filleting his first fish
Super gemacht!
Good job!

Und übt gleich weiter
And continous practicing
wie gelernt...
just like he learned it…
He has done that very well. We ate the amberjack on the same day grilled fresh with some potatoes. The tuna gave us 14 very big 2-3cm filets, the mahi mahi also gave us 6 filets. So we will not starve during the crossing.

On the next day i recognized, that the hydrogenerator is not working anymore. The generator produced electricity with the flowing water. We used to cover the most of our electricity need with the hydrogenerator during the night and the solar panels during the day. As we lifted up the generator we saw the problem: the wings of the propeller broke off and we had no replacement propeller. Now we had to use our normal generator for 2-3hours at night, to cover our need of electricity and load the batteries- we also ordered two new propellers via email.

The nights became calmer and we found a board routine, but 3 1/4 hours isn’t doing us good in the long time. (The one who know me, know that I prefer at least 8, even better 10 hours of sleep).
Müdigkeit ist ein ständiger Begleiter
Being tired became normal
Täglich finden wir an Deck am Morgen "Flying Fish"
We daily find the „flying fish“ on deck
We enjoy the time together, play card, talk a lot, try new knots and try to splice (for example a rope eye)

Michas erster Augspleiß mit genähtem Takling
Michas first eye- splice with a stitched takling.

On the next day we again bring out the fishing rods. Sadly we do not hear the break and the fish is taking 700meters of lure from us- what a bummer.

Squalls).
On the 22.11. the weather become a little bit rougher, cloudy skies and we take the parasailor down, 1. reff and genoa and a day later 2. reff, a little rain, at night even big rain showers and gusts over 30 kn (so called squalls).

These squalls bring heavy and changing wind at the edge of these squalls. The wind can, for a short time, double up his speed and thats why you always have to keep an eye on the radar, because thats were you can identify them best and adapt your sails to it.

unser Plotter:: Squalls gut zu erkennen
our plotter: squalls are good to identify

sehr ungemütlich
very uncomfortable

In the next days the wind also changes a lot of his directions NE-SE, we always have to adapt the standing of the sails and as the wind finally came more constantly on the 25.11. it became a little calmer and even the sun came out.
During the day we have mostly 30 degrees in the shadow and sometimes you can not stay in the burning sun, 28 degrees at night. Nobody of us is wearing shoes, we are mostly just wearing shorts and sometimes a shirt- summer sailing is getting ready and we are very tired and sleep a lot- both of us!

On the 25.11. at 8:30 we have the half behind us- we skip tradition of throwing a sip of rum over board and will instead drink it in the caribbean. But as a celebration Micha is cooking Swabian spätzle (noodles) with pork and sauce- amazing!!

We again catched an amberjack and Micha fought again with an heavy fish- sadly the fish won after an 1/2 hour and we lost our bait with some lure- we need heavier equipment ;-)

We sail again with the parasailor, wind 12-20kn, constant and no squalls, nights are calm and we both sleep well! At the night from the 26. to the 27.11. we sometimes have rain and squalls, wind between 5-7 beauforts and in currents over 30kn, we have clear, bright moon-nights- its almost full moon. The parasailor was now up for 3 days and nights- at the best we sailed with 13,5 kn down the wave.

"unser"/ "our" Parasailor
In the night of the 29. Micha was on duty and suddenly screams out at 3.15: „come for help, the parasailor ripped“. So out of bed, shorts on and out in the night. The Parasailor ripped completely through over the orange wing- so we pulled it down and then get the mainsail and genoa out and I continued sleeping.

In the following night it was raining very hard, the wave came from the side and crashes agains the hulls so bad, that we thought our boat will break apart- everything makes noises and the boat rolls down the 3 meter waves- a little rough night ;-)

We were sailing very fast and as I asked Micha, if he could imagine to not directly sail to St. Lucia, because we are so fast that we have a couple days left, that we could spent 4-5 days in Barbados and cross the finishing line on Monday the 7.12. before it closes at 12 o’clock.
Also the toursim guide promises a lot from Babados: the oldest rum distillery in the world and 2 others as well, beautiful beaches, Harrison’s cave with underground lakes and waterfalls and and and…

We are in the first third of the ARC+, but we never had the ambition to compet on the regatta part. Barbados is about 100 miles away from the othe caribbean islands and that would mean, if we want to sail to Barbados from there, we have to sail against wind and wave and that makes no fun. Micha was immediately in and so we changes directions: „Barbados“!

On the 29th we install the alarm system on board, because we read about break ins, even though when you are on board. We connected the switchboard to the board network, which wasn’t easy, because we needed continuously electricity for the other components like move detector, gas detector and door contacts. The gas detector said, that he will run with 12volts, but only had  130 volts cabe with it. So i opened the detector removed the circuit board and solder a new cable to the 12volt port. And it actually worked! Then we were laying a new cable from the kitchen to the distributor in the starbord hull, which is with a hard wave and a rolling ship not as easy as it sounds like, and as I connect it there is no electricity…. (even though i measured it through, I promise)

Manjana- tomorrow is also a day for work- but now it was already 8pm and dark outside.

On the next day we were laying down another, longer cable to another distributor and that one worked.

Auszug aus dem Logbuch der First Step 30. November 2015:
One entree from the logbook of the First Step 30. November 2015:

„Today is the 30. November and we will arrive Barbados tomorrow, the sun is shining, we ate some pancakes with apples and nutella for breakfast. Today is our cleaning day, the bathrooms, kitchen and floor have to be cleaned, the parasailor prepared for the sailmaker, the dirty laundry prepared for washing and drying, new sheets for the mattresses. All ropes have to be stored away and prepared for bearthing.“

Barbados kommt gegen 3.30 Uhr am 1. Dezember in Sicht – Laaaand!
We saw Barbados at around 3:30am at the skyline on December 1st- laand!

Nun beginnt das seichte Leben; baden, sonnen, schnorcheln, nix tun, tauchen, lesen, schreiben, fotografieren, wieder nix tun....and so on.
Barbados, the caribbean dream comes true, now will everything change, the clocks are running quiet and slower/ wait, what for clocks??? ;-)
Now starts the good life: swimming, sun bathing, snorkeling, doing nothing, diving, reading, writing, taking pictures, again doing nothing…. and so on.

Geschafft !!!
We made it!!!
We defeated the atlantic ocean and are really proud at that!!!

2093 Seemeilen (ca. 4000 Kilometer) nur Wasser, Wind und Wellen
2093 nautical miles (about 4000 kilometers) just water, wind and wave

We sailed in average 164 nautical miles a day and sailed with an avergae speed of 6,84 knots, which is quiet good for us!!!
Now we will recover and sleep a lot.
