Atlantiküberquerung/ Leg 1 Gran Canaria (Las Palmas) – Kapverden (Mindelo) (Atlantic crossing Leg 1)

8.11 – 14.11.2015 (Micha)
Now we where finally after a lot of sailing in Gran Canaria. From here one we will start our journey; the ARC+ with the atlantic crossing, on which we prepared intensiv. Finally the time was there.
alle Yachten sind voll beflaggt
All yachts are full with decorative flags
We both felt the excitement and as mom left on the 27.11. we started directly with finishing the last preparations. There is still a lot to do for us: We have to  repair my little accident (reseal the teak on the port side); we need a new anchor; the whole boat has to be polished; the Dinghy has to be cleaned and stored; we need a new roll for our spinnaker halyard; the halyard needs a  support on the splice; the email for the satellite has to be installed; we have to shop groceries; finish a rigg check; finish the safety check of the ARC+ and still so much more….

We were letting our drinks, fruits and vegetables deliver to our boat. Vincent and Micha shopped in the supermarket and rented a car.
First I want to explain to everyone, who does not know what the ARC is, why we will cross the atlantic ocean with the ARC+:

The ARC, spelled out Atlantic Rally for Cruisers, is a regatta over the atlantic ocean which was founded by the famous sailor Jimmy Cornell. The ARC wants to give the best basic conditions for up to 250 vessel for crossing the atlantic ocean with the highest safety standards, a lot of experience and seminars. The big advantage of the ARC is, that you will cross the atlantic ocean with an higher safety aspect because first, there is an certain safety equipment required, to attend the ARC, also you do not cross the ocean alone, but with other boats as well and will become a weather and tracking report every day via satellite. The regatta aspect is not really the main focus, because thats the safe crossing. There are racing divisions and cruising devisions for the faster yachts in the ARC. Last year a 100 foot yacht crossed the atlantic ocean in 8 days- that is a record!

This ARC won of course a lot of popularity in the last couple of years and besides the normal ARC other ARC regattas got founded (World- ARC, ARC Europe, ARC USA/ Baltic), the same as the ARC+. Which is also very popular for double- handed crews, just like us, because we will not directly cross the atlantic ocean from Las Palmas, but will make a break at the Cape Verdes. Which is of course a nice break and also minimizes the distance of the atlantic. And so we decided 3 years ago to attend the ARC+. And now we are finally here, somehow its still not really realizable for us, to finally start the atlantic crossing on the 8th of November.

But there was still a lot on our to-do list and so we started to work our way through as soon as mom left.
And also there were many seminars and several workshops and activities from the ARC+ and so we decided to somehow organize the chaos, of what to do and what not to finish our work as soon as possible.

Wetter- Kommunikation auf See, Sicherheitseminare etc.
Weather- communication on sea, safety seminar etc.

During this whole process we still had in the back of our minds, that for the first leg (to the Cape Verdes) we will take Vincent on board on the 5. November.
Vincent is a french journalist that asked through the ARC office in England different crews, if they could imagine to let him sail with them until Mindelo. He then became the answers back from different crews and he could decide, which boat he wanted to join. He really liked our father- son story and so decided to join us. Which made us very happy, because besides the fact that he will write an article about us, he brings a lot of experience with him. Vincent is a sailing teacher and skipper of a 60 feet trimaran. He sailed several regattas and also a lot of catamarans and so we hoped, to learn a lot from him.
Vincent, natürlich mit Rotwein ;-)
Vincent, of course with red wine ;-)

Now, after we get closer to the departure date, the excitement, the pressure to get everything done and also the stress increased quiet a lot. Of course this did not left out any dispute during dad and me. But after a long talk on the beach everything was clarified and we kept going. I guess a little fight is normal in a situation like that ;)

Vincent arrived well at the 5. November and we got along very good together. He knew the Lagoon 400 S2 from 2 month ago, as he was the skipper on it for a little trip. That of course were perfect conditions for the crossing and so we took Vincent into our working process and were ready for the departure.

What was very nice was, that the SY Jucunda (Frank & Julius) arrived a couple of days before our departure and so we were able to say goodbye to them and spent a couple of days together. These two will cross the atlantic ocean as well, but a couple of days later with the normal ARC.
But before we left, we had to immortalize ourselves on the breakwater in Las Palmas, which is an tradition before you cross an ocean.

After we pumped some fuel quickly, we went on to the sea. Our now longest sailing part was ahead of us and under a  lot of horns and honks from other sailors we left the harbor. It was an amazing feeling, to finally start THE trip, on which we prepared ourselves for the last couple of years.

The starting signal went off and the rally started.

After we crossed the start line with main sail and genoa we came into a group of dolphins, which joined us for a short period of time. We were ready to get the parasailor up. Vincent said, he knew the parasailor already and made some testings on it for a magazine. So Vincent and I attached the parasailor to the ropes. After the wind came from the right angle we pulled it up. As soon as the parasailor was up, we saw, that two ropes were tangled up. While 20kn of wind blew into the parasailor, dad and Vincent and me were running around on dreck, screaming and trying everything to get it down and untangle the ropes. After we solved this problem, Vincent tried out the MOB (man over board) button and I explained him everything about it and showed him, how to turn if off.

After we finally solved both problems and had the right course I heard a crackling noise down in the kitchen. Vincent wanted to drink something and by accident a glas fell down, which separated itself in 100 peaces after it kissed the ground. So we had to get a brush and sweep it up. I just threw all the shards into the garbage as I heard Vincent scream; he forgot to close the side window of his cabin and so a wave came inside. The whole cabin was soked with salt water!! So we had to get everything out and wash it off with sweet water. All the mattresses, sheets, blankets and pillows had to be rinsed off by sweet water and dried up outside. After that we also had to rinse out the whole cabin with sweet water…
Vincent was really sorry for it and had to laugh a little bit about himself, because he always told his sailing- student to close all windows, and now he forgot to close it as well. But this can even happen to experienced sailors. At least we had something to do for the rest of the day;)

so geht auch ein Tag rum...
I guess you can also spent a day like that…

After this everything went a little easier and there came a little calmness on board. But suddenly we heard a very loud bang and after a little search we found the problem- the new spinnaker roll broke out of the mast. Luckily nobody got hurt by that 300 gram heavy peace flying around the air. So we got the Parasailor down and also the Code 0, changed the halyard, stored the Code 0 and pulled up the Parasailor again.
Now we hoped that the crossing will be much more calm that the start was, and thats how it should come… It took us for 913 nautical miles 6 days and 7 hours that were, besides the stressful start, very comfortable. We had up the Parasailor for most of the time and enjoyed the sunset and spent a lot of great time with talking, eating, playing cards and just having company. We had an amazing time together and we had a very nice time with Vincent.

We arrived Mindelo on November 14th at 9pm, 913 nautical miles, 6 days, 9 hours and became welcomed by an nice ARC committee on the pier. After that we went for an welcome cocktail and spent a very nice evening in the sailors- bar and had lobster for dinner, Eating lobster here was a recommendation, because its supposed to be very cheap and tasteful and that exactly how it was:

Super lecker ! Absolutely great!

Vincent sadly had to leave on the next morning and so we spent the last night with Vincent and with live music at the bar and an open air concert at the main square.

Even though it was a rough start, we really enjoyed having Vincent on board and wish him the best and good success with his article. Now we wanted to see a little bit of the Cape Verdes, relax and finish the last preparations for the next big trip.
The Cape Verdes lay in front of the west coast of Africa (at about the hight of Senegal) and has 10 islands, of which 9 are actually occupied. The area used to be Portuguese islands, but became independent ath the 5. July 1975.
The language is still Portuguese.

On the next day we drove with the ferry over to the neighbor island Santo Antao and took a tour around the island, which is know for the mountain called „face mountain“.
